Prof.Vivek Kumar

Vivek Kumar (Ph.D.) is Professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University where he earned his M.A., M. Phil, and Ph.D. As a recipient of Fulbright Teacher’s Fellowship, Prof Kumar was Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and a resident at The South Asia Institute, Columbia University, New York, USA during the spring semester 2012. He also taught a course ‘Social Exclusion and Inclusion in Indian Society’ in the Department of Sociology Columbia University, New York. In May and June he also went to teach and research in Humboldt University, Berlin in Germany. Earlier, he has been Lecturer at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Pune, Jammu, and Mumbai. His publications include the edited volume Dynamics of Change and Continuity in the Age of Globalization: Voices from the Margins (2009), India's Roaring Revolution (2006), and Dalit Leadership in India (2002). He has supervised 16 M.Phil and 8 Ph.D. students. His eight students are already employed as Assistant Professors in different universities of India.

He has recently completed a research project, "Social Status and Social Attitudes in India: A Study of Indian College Students," with Professor Jim Sidanius (Harvard) and University of British Columbia. A DAAD –UGC fellow Dr. Kumar is involved in perusing another project ‘Under Class in Germany and Dalits in India’ with Humboldt University, Germany. Earlier he was involved in a project ‘Building Global Democracy: Including the excluded’ with University of Warwick, UK and eight other institutions located in different continents of the world. Prof. Kumar has travelled to South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Spain, UK, USA, and Sri Lanka and Nepal for his academic activities.

Dr. Kumar was Chairman, Sub-Group on Awareness Generation, Statistics, Monitoring, Innovation and Research for the Formulation of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) by the Ministry of Empowerment and Social Justice, Government of India (2012). Dr. Kumar was a member, Committee on Mid-term appraisal of Tribal Sub-Plan and Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan of the 11th Five Year Plan constituted by the Planning Commission of India. Prof. Kumar regularly participates in the debates of national and international importance on national Television channels and write regular columns in national newspapers and magazines regularly.
